Personal Secretary to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
Sheela also known as Ma Anand Sheela was the personal secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, the powerful spiritual guru who had thousands of followers in India and the West. From 1981 through 1985, she managed the Rajneeshpuramashram in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. Sheela was born in Baroda, state of Gujarat and at age 18 she moved to the United States and attended Montclair State College in New Jersey.
In 1981, with the help of Sheela, who became his personal assistant, Rajneesh bought a ranch nearby the tiny town of Antelope, Oregon, and moved his cult there, creating a whole new city named Rajneeshpuram. Sheela became president of Rajneesh Foundation International and managed the commune, which was controversial. In 2018, a documentary, Wild Wild Country, was released that includes interviews with Sheela.
