TiE Global Chair
The strength of TiE comes from our unique Network of Members and Charter Members, at all stages of their entrepreneurial and professional journey. TiE Members have an opportunity to mingle with Charter Members, who are accomplished entrepreneurs, venture capitalist and angel investors from various sectors. Aspiring entrepreneurs have an exceptional opportunity to network and get guidance from those who have had successful exits, or those who have built some of the largest corporations in the world. It is a matter of pride that we have had several examples of TiE members, who have come full circle at TiE – started off as budding entrepreneurs, leveraged TiE resources at different stages of the journey, and are now one of the “Charter Members” or “Givers at TiE”.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of founding of TiE. As one of the early founders, I’d like to say a few words on how TiE started, and what our hopes and dreams were when we started TiE. A group of us in Silicon Valley, who had succeeded as entrepreneurs got thinking about how best we could give back to the society. We were not fully satisfied with traditional philanthropic activity of just donating money to worthy causes. We were entrepreneurs and bold in our thinking. We, wanted to figure out how we could have profound impact on the society through our actions and dedicated effort. We concluded that we were uniquely capable of helping the next generation of entrepreneurs become successful. We felt that it was a noble pursuit for the successful entrepreneur and business people to come together as TiE to foster, educate and support the next generation of entrepreneurs, and create wealth in the communities we live in. Our hope and dream was that many young from next generation would take the plunge into the entrepreneurial journey with our help and succeed in large numbers.
An important attribute of TiE is that it is an inclusive organization – ready to help any entrepreneur who seeks help from TiE. Because of its ideals and service to the community, TiE chapters have attracted participation by local population. TiE has created a powerful global network of Chapters and Charter Members for the benefit of all members.
TiE continues to develop many innovative programs that substantially enhance and expand the ability of Chapters and Charter members to foster and develop entrepreneurs. TiE50, TYE (TiE Young Entrepreneurs), TiE Women, TiE International Startup Competition, Remote Entrepreneurial Training Classes, Distant Mentoring and TiE Angels are some of the programs that are being worked on and are in various stage of completion.
The dream of TiE that was started in Silicon Valley has resonated with successful people all over the world and collectively they have built TiE to what it is today. TiE today has 59 chapters in 16 countries because of selfless work of TiE Charter Members all over the world. I would like TiE Members to take full advantage of what TiE ecosystem can offer you. I wish you success in your entrepreneurial journey. May you become very successful and in turn decide to give back to society and the world. I wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
Women Focus – Project AIRSWEEE funded by the
U.S. Department of State
TiE global launched the All India Road Show on Women’s Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship initiative to train women entrepreneurs. This Program is funded by the U.S mission in India and the U.S. Department of State. Workshops will be conducted in Coimbatore, Warangal, Jaipur, Nagpur and Durgapur, where 125 aspiring women entrepreneurs will be selected and given training on sustainable business skills by U.S. based mentors who will travel to India.
Ms. Seema Chaturvedi, Chairwoman of Project AIRSWEEE says, “Empowering potential women entrepreneurs is a great way to boost economic growth. A program that promotes an entrepreneurial mindset by providing women with the knowledge and tools of an entrepreneurial possibility can unleash dreams of growth and value creation with a very significant multiplier effect.”
Youth Focus : Invention based TYE Curriculum & Ideation Session
The TYE (TiE Young Entrepreneurs) Program is an Educational program for high-school kids, and is in operation at 20+ TiE Chapters around the world. It is Program that truly impacts the next generation of Entrepreneurs – teaching them business skills and giving them confidence to envision entrepreneurship as an achievable goal for themselves.
This month, we conducted an “Train the trainers session” for instructors, so that they can get an overview of the New Invention-based curriculum for high-school kids. Shashi Jain, a youth educator and instructor of the TYE program, along with a team at TiE Oregon Chapter have revamped the TYE curriculum to focus on Lean Startup Business Model and Innovation. Recently, at the TiE Global Summit in Dec ’16, Shashi also delivered a well-received presentation on “How to create a Great Idea in an Hour” to a crowd of 300 students and parents.
Startup Focus – TiE International Startup Competition
Chapters participating in the TiE International Startup Competition (TISC) are preparing for Startup Competitions at their respective Chapters. Following this, the Regional Finals will take place in Delhi for Asia TISC Finals, London for the TISC Europe, and a Virtual Round for TISC North America. The Grand Prize is an all-expense trip to Houston to participate in the Rice University Business Plan Competition or a Free trip to Silicon Valley to attend TiEcon, participate at the Expo Booth, and an opportunity to meet TiE Angels and investors.
Systems Focus – Events & Member Platform
For the last 10 years, the TiE network has used 123Signup to power our Event Registration and Membership Management. We are now moving to a new Platform powered by Explara – which has a better UI, more features & benefits for greater ease of networking among members and ease of usability for Chapter staff.
The new platform was selected by a Global IT committee after evaluating 10 platforms. The IT committee was led by Rajiv Patel of Silicon Valley and included Chirag Patel from Ahmedabad, Nitin Agarwal from Delhi, Amyn Sadruddin from Atlanta and Andrew Tjahyadi from Silicon Valley. TiE Global thanks all the IT committee members for their efforts over the last 6 months.
The platform has been beta tested by 6 Chapters and will be rolled out to all Chapters during the month of February 2017. In the coming weeks, Chapters will be updating their data to sync with the new system. Please do update your profile details on the new system, when you get a message from your Chapter.
